Question:
I had the kids last weekend and made some plans with friends of ours. My coparent found out and said he didn’t like that family and asked that we not make plans with them in the future. Is this a reasonable request?
Answer:
First, is there a specific reason he doesn’t like them that would impact the safety or well-being of the kids? That may be something to consider. If, however, it’s just preference, then no, he doesn’t get to choose who you spend your time with when you have the kids, and the same applies to you. There will probably be plans that you make at some point that he doesn’t love as well. This issue comes up often during divorce and the underlying issue is usually control – it isn’t easy to accept that each parent gets to make plans that the other parent may or may not like.
If you’re feeling stressed about what the other parent is doing with the kids on their time, recognize that you want the same flexibility to make plans as you’re extending to your coparent. Try to focus instead on yourself and doing something you enjoy, rather than on something you can’t change. 💪 💝
