What I’m Thankful for This Year
Happy Thanksgiving!
Like many of you I will sit down with friends and family tomorrow. We’ll be a big, motley crew of siblings, parents, stepparents, grandparents, girlfriends and boyfriends, cousins and exes. I am so grateful that we will all be together and that we are able to have our large, unique family in one place!
But it wasn’t always like this, which makes me appreciate it even more now.
This week I share some reflections on my own path and what I’m particularly grateful for this year.
Wishing everyone a meaningful holiday – whatever that looks like for you!
💝💪
Do you have a tough question? Ask away. I’ll find the right experts to weigh in and make sure you’re getting the input you need.
Question: I don’t have my kids for Thanksgiving this year and while I am trying to be upbeat I am so sad. This isn’t our first year apart but for some reason it feels harder. I do have plans on Thanksgiving day but I would love any suggestions for getting through this sadness. Answer: I believe the most important thing you can do is accept how you feel as valid without trying to force yourself to feel differently. It’s totally understandable that you miss your kids! Some time periods are just harder than others, and the holidays are difficult for so many of us. Can you give yourself permission to be sad – even put a time limit on it – I will cry, sit in sadness, yell, etc. for 20 minutes at a time (set a timer!), then I will go do something that brings me even a moment of joy. For example, call a friend, go for a walk, light a candle, or watch a movie you love. Pushing your sadness down is like trying to stuff an octopus into a bag. A tentacle will definitely find its way out, probably sooner than later. Use the energy you would use to fight your sadness to be in it and move through it when you’re ready. Repeat that cycle as often as you need, and know you are not alone. No matter where you are you are worthy of love, joy, and hope – whatever that looks like this year. Be kind to yourself as you figure that out. 💪 💝Here I’ll share some of the books, websites, podcasts and experts to help make your journey a little less shitty!
I love sharing gifts with meaning, and this holiday I am so happy to tell you about my former client, Liddy Romero, and her amazing cookie business.
Liddy grew up in Texas, helping in her Mexican-American family’s bakery, where her father’s treasured cookie recipe was widely known and loved.
Post-divorce, and after years of devoting her time to lower-income families through nonprofit work, her sweet tooth for her father’s Pan de Polvo drew her back to the cookie. Today these delicious cookies are available in Denver and to send to friends and family around the country. I’ve already shared them (and eaten them!) and it’s my pleasure to extend this special offer that Liddy created just for my readers:
Visit RomeroCookies.com, and use code ADAVBOGO24 to buy one, get the second for 20% off
This holiday season you can support a woman- and hispanic-owned small business run by an amazing person and entrepreneur. I’m grateful to call her a client and friend, and I know you will enjoy these delicious treats!
